The City of McAllen is continuously seeking volunteers to serve on various city appointed advisory boards and committees. Requirements include:
Requirements include:
- Being a resident of the City (By City Ordinance Ch. 2)
- Being a registered voter (By City Ordinance Ch. 2)
- Complying with the required training pursuant to the City’s Ethics Ordinance 2006-68 encompassing Ethics, Open Meetings and Open Records Training within a set period of appointment;
- Attending 50% of regular and special meetings (By City Ordinance Ch. 2); and
- Submitting a complete application to the City Secretary’s Office.
Appointments are made by the Mayor and City Commissioners. Certain boards/committees require knowledge and expertise in a certain industry.

Advisory Boards
- Airport Advisory Board
- Makes recommendations to the City Commission on matters pertaining to the McAllen-Miller International Airport . The airport board provides input on master plan updates and improvements to be made at the Airport. They also take part and recommend rules, conditions and regulations for private airplanes under which such private owners shall use and operate their private facilities.
- Ambulance Evaluation Committee
- Evaluates and reports to the City Commission on the operation of the emergency ambulance service rendered by company or companies rendering such service.
- Anzalduas International Bridge Board
- Building Board of Adjustment and Appeals
- The Board has the duty to hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is error in any requirement, or determination made administratively in the enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance. The Board hears appeals that grant variances to setback requirements and special exceptions to reconstruction of nonconforming buildings.
- Civic Center Advisory Board
- Keeps informed as to all aspects of the civic center operation, management, regulations, rules, maintenance, décor, policies and fees.
- Civil Service Commission
- Addresses all Police Officer and Firefighter matters in certifying eligibility lists after entry level and promotional testing, and hearing disciplinary appeals and complying with the Local Government Code, Chapter 143.
- Community Development Council
- Recommends to the City Commission CDBG HOME (Home Investment Partnership Program) funding allocations.
- Development Corporation
- Organized for the purpose of benefiting and accomplishing economic development, employment for the public welfare of the City.
- Firefighters' Pension Board
- Manage the retirement fund for firefighters and approve applications for retirement and claims for disability.
- Golf Course Advisory Board
- This advisory board assists with the scheduled tournaments and makes recommendations to the City Commission relating to the Palmview Golf Course.
- McAllen Housing Authority Board
- Purpose of this committee is set forth in the Articles of Incorporation. Namely to maintain a fund or funds of real or personal property or both, subject to restrictions set forth in the corporate charter, to use and apply the whole or any part of the income there from and the principal thereof exclusively for charitable purposes.
- Historical Preservation Council
- Works to protect, enhance and promote city landmarks or districts of historical or cultural importance to promote the economic, cultural and historical nature of the city.
- Keep McAllen Beautiful
- Works to formulate projects with the aim of preserving, and protecting the beautification of the city. The Board advises the City Commission concerning community appearance through developing and expanding the awareness of proper waste reduction practices, litter prevention and the beautification and environmental preservation of McAllen 's natural beauty.
- McAllen International Toll Bridge Board
- The board recommends to the City Commission concerning operating policy of the Bridge.
- McAllen Library Board
- The board makes recommendations to the City Commission concerning operating policy of the Library and long-range capital improvement planning.
- Parks & Recreation Board
- Advise and recommend to the City Commission on matters concerning the establishment, maintenance, and operation of parks within the city. The Board also advises and confers with the Director of Parks and Recreation and his staff about various projects that are in the works or proposed.
- Planning & Zoning Board
- This board is charged with submitting reports, plans, and recommendations to the City Commission for the orderly growth, development, and welfare of the City. They review and make recommendations on zoning change requests, conditional use permits for longer than one year, and variances to Subdivision Ordinance requirements for development.
- Quinta Mazatlan Advisory Board
- Senior Citizen Advisory Board
- Make recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Department regarding programs and conditions, which affect the Center. Center also coordinates and monitors various fund-raisers and benefits. Furthermore, the board listens to complaints and/or problems that occur within the center's activity programs and seeks solutions to make it possible that all activities are fully available for everyone.
- Traffic Commission
- Makes recommendations to the City Commission in order to reduce and eliminate traffic congestion and flow throughout the City.
