International Friendship Run Celebrating 23rd Anniversary
McAllen, Texas - The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department would like to invite you to participate in the 23rd Annual International Friendship Run, a 10K road race. The International Friendship Run starting point is Anzalduas Park located along the Rio Grande River, and finishes at the City of McAllen’s Los Encinos Park. The date for this year’s race is Sunday, November 23, 2008. Race time is 8 a.m.
“The International Friendship Run, a 6.2-mile race, is run over a course certified by USA Track and Field, and offers runners an opportunity to test their abilities and compete in a truly unique international event,” said Larry Pressler, McAllen Parks and Recreation Director.
Along the race route, spectators cheer runners on as they pass through the town of Granjeno and sprint towards the finish line. Los Encinos Park, located at 2900 Sarah, is not only the finishing line, but is a staging point as well. Runners are instructed to arrive to the Park early; anytime after 6 a.m. is okay, in order to load on buses and be taken to the starting line. After the run, participants are treated to lively entertainment, hot breakfast tacos, and an optional dip in the Park’s swimming pool.
A Youth 2K Race is also held as part of the festivities. The 2K Race also begins at 8:00 a.m. The starting line for the Kids Race is at the 8K marker on Military Highway. Young runners have the opportunity to finish at the official 10K finish line and in front of rows of spectators and proud parents. Local elementary schools are encouraged to sign up their students, and the school with the most participants keeps the traveling trophy in their display case until next year.
The International Friendship Run actually kicks off on Saturday, November 22nd. Runners may pick up their packets and race numbers at the Registration Expo from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Palm View Community Center (3401 Jordan, corner of Ware and Jordan Road). The Expo features a traditional pasta dinner served by Tony Roma's which will be offered from 4:00p.m. - 6:00p.m. All runners are encouraged to attend. Late registration for both races is also possible at this time.
On Sunday, race results are quickly and professionally tabulated. Upon completion of the race, runners have the opportunity to enjoy live entertainment and snacks while the results are finalized.
