What is Compost?

Compost is a mixture of organic residues such as leaves and brush that have been piled and allowed to undergo aerobic biological decomposition, a process called composting. The decaying matter is used as a fertilizer.

Benefits of Compost

Flowers

Compost provides plants with vital nutrients by improving microbial activity that helps release soil nutrients for plants. Compost is natural and reduces and/or eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers that can be costly and potentially damaging to the environment.

Compost also increases the amount of organic carbon and nitrogen by improving the physical properties of soil, allowing higher nutrient intake by plants and higher crop yields. Soil structure also improves by using compost, making tillage easier.

Furthermore, your soil will increase in water holding capacity.

How to use Compost

You can use your compost as mulch for you plants or to mix in a hole for a plant. Compost can also be mixed with some sand and soil to form a potting soil for growing potted plants. You can also turn compost into a top dressing for grass.
