McAllen Starts Census Process
The City of McAllen has selected Chief Victor Rodriguez of the McAllen Police Department to chair the U.S. Census 2010 Complete Count Committee for the city. Chief Rodriguez will have the first meeting Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the McAllen Memorial Library at 601 N. Main Street, McAllen, Exhibition Room.
“One of the principles our country is founded on is representation. The census count allows everyone to be counted. Next to voting, it is one of the most important rights,” said Chief Victor Rodriguez, McAllen Police Department. He states, “So stand up and be counted. Let the census work for you so, that the census will work for us all.”
The media is invited to meet members of the U.S. Census 2010 Complete Count Committee along with members of subcommittees, helping to increase awareness about the importance of the U.S. Census. Subcommittees are divided into several categories such as government, business, education, religion, community based organizations and media.
The Census happens every 10 years and is critical in the allocation of funds to communities for schools, senior citizen programs, libraries, infrastructure, hospitals, community programs and much more. Congressional seating and redistricting is also based on the number of residents living in each community.
