Officials Look to Develop Property West of Convention Center

As reported by The Monitor's Dave Hendricks:

McALLEN — City officials unveiled an ambitious $10.7 million, city-coordinated development project on Monday designed to transform property west of McAllen’s convention center into an upscale, urban area.

Under the plan, McAllen would take a hand-on approach to development running north-south from Business 83 to Expressway 83 and east-west from Ware Road to Taylor Road. McAllen would leverage the city’s regulatory muscle to comprehensively rezone the area, organize a tax increment reinvestment zone and establish an overlay district to enforce higher development standards.

“I think this is going to be a hot area,” said Mayor Richard Cortez, speaking Monday at a city workshop. “I think this area is the next big growth area.”
