Boys' & Girl's Club

Overview

The Boys & Girls Club of McAllen is a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to help youths of all backgrounds, with special concern for those from disadvantaged circumstances, develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. The Club offers positive alternatives to youths and helps to build and strengthen their sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and a sense of power and influence. Trained, professional staff challenge our youths, making them feel a part of their community and channel their efforts to positive ends. Given this opportunity to become responsible, with a chance to contribute, youths can acquire a stake in our community, which will help them mature into successful adults.

The Boys & Girls Club of McAllen's reputation is built on the foundation of strong and visionary group of leaders, quality programs, and trained professional staff. Increasing collaborations and partnerships with schools, churches, the government, and other organizations have enabled our Club to grow with more efficiency.

Activities

The Boys & Girls Club offers affordable yearly membership dues ($5.00) so that all boys and girls can afford to belong. No youth is ever turned away. In 1999 over 1, 500 youths were provided with scholarships. The programs conducted are diversified which recognize and respond to the collective and individual needs and interests of our boys and girls. Programs represent the five core program areas which the Boys & Girls Club targets:

Character and Leadership Development
The Character and Leadership Development Program Area empowers youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and others’ cultural identities.
Examples: Keystone Club, Torch Club, Leadership Training for Junior Staff, Community Service Projects, Youth of the Year, Community Litter Trash Removal Campaign
Education and Career Development
The Education and Career Development Program Area enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career.
Examples: Computers, Homework Assistance, Tutorial, Math, Spelling, Creative Writing, Job Skills Training, Reading, Computer Lab, Library, Science Fun
Sports, Fitness And Recreation
The Sports, Fitness and Recreation Program Area develops fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills.
Examples: Step Aerobics, Baseball, T-Ball, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Girls Softball, Swimming, Cheerleading, Weight Lifting, Billiards, Foosball, Table Tennis, Kickboxing
The Arts
The Arts Program Area enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation for the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing.
Examples: Photography, Ballet & Jazz, Piano, Guitar, Choir, Fine Arts, Drama, Journalism
Health and Life Skills
The Health and Life Skills Program Area develops young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.
Examples: Smart Moves, Smart Girls, Sewing, Cooking, Street Smart, Kids in Control
