Public Works mission is to provide our citizenry with superior and fiscally responsible representation; provide reliable solid waste & recycling collection services; render clean & well- maintained alleys, streets and sidewalks; maintain functional drainage ways, storm water collection systems and appurtenances; and to preserve the culture plus enhance the quality of life that attracted residents to come to the City of McAllen…the City of Palms.

The Public Works Department is primarily organized into two divisions:

1. Solid Waste (staff of 95) is functionally divided by the responsibility for Residential, Commercial, Recycling and Brush Collection; Recycling performs both residential and commercial recycle collections. KEEP MCALLEN BEAUTIFUL staff also report to this division.
2. Streets and Drainage (staff of 47) is functionally divided by the responsibility for street maintenance/repair, street cleaning, drainage maintenance, and graffiti removal. Seventy-five (75) percent of Streets and Drainage's efforts is devoted to street and alleyways maintenance and includes McAllen Public Utility cut repairs, street repairs, pothole patching, and seal coating. Drainage maintenance is primarily devoted to keeping drainage clear (more than 3,500 inlets) and mowing open drainage systems and Airport fields. Mowing responsibilities beyond drainage include mowing City rights-of-way and City facilities, and on-call mowing of "weedy lots" as required by the City Health Department.

Dispatching responsibilities lie within the administrative personnel sections.
