McAllen Parks and Recreation Department Trying Sustainable Process New Fertigation System on Trial Run

by The Office of Communications and Media Relations | Dec 09, 2013

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department is testing a new process in an effort to be more water efficient. The Parks and Recreation Department is working with Turf Feeding Systems on developing a test site in one of the parks for their Fertigation System. The pilot project will be at Jackson Regional Detention Facility (RDF) which has always been a difficult area to grow grass due to the condition of the soil and the amount of use of the park.

"The Parks Department is really excited to conduct this test to see if we can do something with Jackson.  It is by far our most challenging park for grass," said Sally Gavlik, McAllen Parks and Recreation Director.  She adds, "The intent is to complete the evaluation and then determine if there are other park sites that would benefit from this product."

Parks will be working with Turf Feeding Systems to evaluate the product and see how it works with our irrigation systems and soil.

The Parks and Recreation Department has been investigating a variety of options to reduce water consumption and alternate water sources.  The desire for the City of McAllen is to be a leader in conservation of water for our citizens while still being able to maintain quality green space, sport fields, and trails for its citizens.
