McAllen’s TML Conference Win

The City of McAllen was awarded the 2021 Municipal Excellence Award in Management Innovations for Cities with over 25,000 population. McAllen City Commission, City Manager, and staff were present at the 2021 Texas Municipal League (TML) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Houston to accept the award. Innovations which led to the City's success included hosting a Census Telethon, collaboration for city-wide WIFI and pandemic response.

South Texas Book Fair

The South Texas Book Festival was once again a leader at the Texas Festival and Events Association conference. The festival won 20 award including the prestigious Best in Texas award.

McAllen Public Library Anniversary



McAllen Public Library celebrated three milestone anniversaries; the 10th Anniversary for the Main Library and the 20th Anniversary for the Palm View and Lark Branch libraries.

Connectivity Hero

The City of McAllen, McAllen ISD, and a local technology company received the Connectivity Hero of the Year award for their innovative collaboration in increasing internet access to McAllen citizens. The award was presented by Cambium Networks.







City Council of the Year




McAllen City Commission was recognized as the City Council of the Year at the 2021 Texas City Managers Association Annual Awards ceremony. The award recognizes and honors outstanding city councils that made significant contributions to local governments in Texas. Highlighting their focus, commitment, and dedication, during a year of unprecedented challenges, made this recognition exemplary. Challenges have included the global pandemic, the loss of two police officers killed in the line of duty, and a hurricane.

Safety Awards


The Texas Department of Public Safety ranked McAllen second lowest in Texas for violent crimes.

Researchers at proch.com ranked McAllen as 6th lowest in Texas and 7th lowest in the United States for burglary and theft (small cities).










Halloween Award


The City of McAllen ranked #15 in the United States – up from #17 in 2019 – on the list of Best Places to Celebrate Halloween.

Public Safety

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez honored the McAllen Police Department with a Congressional Record for the department’s commitment to the safety and protection of residents.



Tree City USA

The City of McAllen was named the 2021 Tree City USA, by the Arbor Day Foundation, in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.

TAMI Awards

The City of McAllen Office of Communications proudly received four awards for their public relations, social media, and video production work at the state-wide TAMI Awards Competition in Round Rock, Texas.

Blue Legacy Award


The McAllen Public Utility received the Blue Legacy Award at the 2021 Texas Water Virtual Conference Awards ceremony.

The award recognizes water suppliers who demonstrate outstanding and innovative commitment to the state’s mission of promoting responsible water resources management and conservation of Texas’ water resources.

Quinta Mazatlan Awards at TFEA

Quinta Mazatlan once again garnered numerous awards at the 2021 TFEA Awards of Excellence, including the Best Children’s Program and Best Education Program in Texas. The awards recognize the festivals and trails the famed nature-preserve hosts.
