McAllen ISD





The McAllen City Commission welcomed the McAllen ISD Board of Trustees participation in the expansion of Quinta Mazatlan’s Center for Urban Ecology. The expansion will feature a 5-acre outdoor park with teaching pavilions and outdoor classrooms. MISD is set to contribute $4 million to cover the construction cost of the Quinta Mazatlan Discover Center’s expansion.

McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos joined Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez and the Texas AM Agrilife Extension Service as celebrity chefs at the Cooking School for Emergencies. The live demonstration focused on preparing healthy recipes that can be prepared without electricity to sustain families during a disaster.

The City of McAllen is proud to welcome the expansion of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine’s Cancer Center. The new Cancer and Surgery Center will be located at the McAllen Academic Medical Campus. UTRGV is set to purchase 38 acres of land in McAllen, doubling the size of its medical school.

British Consul Visits Quinta Mazatlan




The City of McAllen welcomed British Consul General Richard Hyde to Quinta Mazatlan. The event was a part of the Great British Tour of Texas, organized by the British Consulate in Houston.

Hidalgo Bridge for Vaccine Drive




The City of McAllen, in conjunction with the City of Mission and the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, announced a new binational project that ensured the automotive and other trade industries continued to flow. The new initiative provided essential workers of the maquila industry from the State of Nuevo Leon access to COVID-19 vaccines. Governor-elect of Nuevo Leon, Samuel Garcia, traveled to McAllen to meet with Mayor of McAllen Javier Villalobos, McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, Mayor of Mission Dr. Armando O’Cana, Mayor of Hidalgo Sergio Coronado, and Juan Olaguibel, Superintendent of McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge & Anzalduas International Bridge.

Krysten Sinema Visit Border



The McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge hosted a press conference with Senators John Coryn & Krysten Sinema, and Congressmen Tony Gonzalez & Henry Cuellar in response to the migrant surge. A tour of the Donna Temporary Processing Center and the Delphi Emergency Intake Site alongside local elected officials, stakeholders, and law enforcement officials followed the press conference.

Texas Comptroller Visits Anzalduas Bridge

The Anzalduas International Bridge received Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s visit as part of this Good for Texas Tour: Supply Chains Edition. Throughout his tour visit, Hegar highlighted the impact of supply chains on the Texas economy.

McAllen Sets Temporary Emergency Shelter





The City of McAllen partnered with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley to address the increasing number of migrants who had tested positive for COVID-19. City Commission authorized the building of a temporary emergency shelter to reduce the spread of the virus into the community. McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos declared a local State of Disaster in August as the first step to mitigate emergent health and safety risks due to the rapidly escalating surge of immigrants. The City of McAllen partnered with various community partners to erect a temporary emergency shelter for immigrants released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Essential Economic Trade Initiative




McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos joined Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez in unveiling a binational economic initiative involving Reynosa’s maquiladora industry. The Essential Economic Trade Initiative provided COVID-19 vaccines to maquiladora employees in an effort to restore the region’s economic engines.
