Proposition 2 - Performing Arts Center

The Performing Arts Center, a new City of McAllen venue to replace the over 50-year-old Civic Center Auditorium, is scheduled to be ready to bid in December 2013. Once authorized for complete funding, the project will take 22 to 24 months to bid.

City voters elected to relocate the Civic Center and Auditorium Complex to the present site located at Ware Road and Interstate 2, a segment of U.S. 83 designated as an I-69 “connector” interstate highway, in 2002. The Civic Center Auditorium, which opened in 1960, has continued to be maintained by the City in addition to the Convention Center which opened in 2007.

The Performing Arts Center’s estimated cost is $35,557,465. Funding sources to complete the project are the 2 percent venue tax charged to hotel occupancy authorized by voters in 2011 and the sale of the Civic Center Auditorium property located on 10
th Street and I-2.

ERO Architects of McAllen is designing the 83,000-sq.-ft. facility that will feature state-of-the-art technology in acoustics, audio, lighting and stage support. The lobby will feature a grand staircase, balconies overlooking the lobby and the Convention Center’s Oval Park, restrooms at each of the four levels and elevators to the upper balconies. The Auditorium will feature adjustable acoustics to accommodate popular music to symphonic orchestra; a robust acoustical shell with a celestial ceiling; and four levels of seating, including 550 seats in the orchestra level, 500 seats in the partare level, 400 seats in the first balcony level and 350 seats in the upper balcony, meeting Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

The stage house will fully accommodate the intricate sets of traveling Broadway shows and be acoustically isolated from penetrating noise of approaching aircraft overhead.

An adjustable orchestra pit will set below stage, at seat level and stage level to accommodate 35 to 40 musicians. Backstage support areas include six dressing areas to accommodate casts up to 60, a green room, production offices and a multi-purpose room to support touring companies.

The City currently attracts over 170 shows a year performed at the Convention Center’s exhibit halls and Auditorium. The new venue is anticipated to draw over 200 shows a year featuring Broadway touring shows, Mexican touring plays, popular music concert tours, comedy tours, symphonic orchestra and band concerts, as well as popular family show tours.
