Steps to Ride the Metro

  1. Plan your Trip.
    Need assistance?
Call 956.681.3510 any time Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.... a metro assistant can help you.

    "What you need to know."
"What the closest bus stop is?"
"What time do I prepare to catch the bus?"
"What route transfers to may I need to take?" and
    "What does your trip cost?"

Please have ready the WHERES and WHENS. They are going to ask the following:
    "Where are you?"
    "Where are you going?"
"When do you need to arrive?"

Metro can mail you a trip plan and route schedules.
To pick up maps and schedules please visit Central Station, McAllen Public Library, Chamber of Commerce or City Hall.

  2. Go to the Bus Stop
Be at the stop a few minutes before the bus is estimated to arrive. Double-check the route number and name displayed above the driver's windshield on the destination sign. If you are not sure if it is the right bus, just ask the driver.

  3. Have fare Ready
Exact cash or change or a metro pass are acceptable fares. The single-ride fare is $1.00. The Fare information page lists prices for various options. If you have a Pass Voucher, please present the voucher to your first bus operator for validating.

  4. Get on your Bus
Passengers get off the bus before boarding. Board only through the front door of the bus. Riding the bus is easy; just follow these simple rules. Sit anywhere you like. Generally, seats near the front door are reserved for elderly and mobility-impaired passengers. You may carry on small items; just make sure they don't block the aisle. If you need to access Metro by wheelchair, Metro's buses are accessible. Guide dogs and other service animals are permitted on Metro vehicles. Please see Accessibility Information for more details or call 956.681.3510. Please see Bicycle Commuter Information for details on how to travel with your bicycle.

  5. Deposit your Fare
You must insert the exact fare into the farebox as you board or a Metro pass. Fareboxes accept $1 bills and/or coins, including $1 coin.

  6. Get off at your Stop
About one block from your stop, pull on the yellow chime (next to the windows above passenger seats on most buses). This signals the operator that you want to get off at the next stop.

Exit through the front doors. The operator will open the front door.
