Overview
The Meter Reader Department is divided into two groups of employees which consist of the meter readers and the meter technicians. All employees are required by Texas Commission of Environmental Quality to obtain a “D” Water Operator license with the supervisor being required a “C” License.
METER READERS
The meter reader staff strives to read our customers’ water meters efficiently and accurately. The meter reader’s utility a handheld device to record readings and any comments necessary to assist the billing staff in its review of the readings. This information is electronically imported directly in to the billing system for processing.
The water meters are read in three general regions divided by U.S. Business 83 and Nolana Ave.
Meter readers are tasked with cleaning of meter area is done on a route basis with emphasis on cleaning after the cycle is completed.
METER TECHNICIANS
Meter technicians provide field customer service for McAllen residents in the most professional and efficient manner. Field customer service consists of connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting water service and rechecking meter readings. Staff is trained to survey the area to help customers with their concerns or questions regarding the water meter and/or reading.
Meter technicians also perform requests submitted by utility billing and customer relations department staff such as rechecking meter readings and verification of meter locations. The meter technicians are available to perform emergency after hour calls.
Fiscal Year 2007-2008 Accomplishments
The staff of nine meter readers and one crew leader read 511,105 meters with an accuracy of 99.80%.
The staff of five meter technicians, one crew leader, and assistant manager processed 54,226 service orders, averaging 4,518 service orders per month, with an accuracy of 99.97%.

Utility Billing Manager Terri Uvalle, oversees both Utility Billing & Meter Reader Departments. Ricardo Trevino, Assistant Manager, directly oversees the Meter Reader Department.
