Sam’s Club Brings Employment Opportunities to McAllen families
Club Manager Grace Martinez is one of 10 McAllen associates who have worked for Sam’s Club for more than 20 years. Martinez began her Sam’s Club career in 1988 as an hourly associate in San Antonio. She was promoted to work in an area market office and then began training to be a club manager. Martinez also led the Brownsville club for more than three years before coming to McAllen as manager of the Jackson Avenue club in 2008.
Her husband, Phillip Martinez, has been named manager of the Jackson Avenue club in McAllen. He will transfer from his current position as club manager in Laredo and has 20 years of experience with Sam’s Club. Each Martinez has a son who is currently working for Sam’s Club as well; Jose Alvarado and Phillip Martinez, Jr., are both team leaders at the same club in San Antonio.
The new Sam’s Club will employ approximately 178 associates.
Sam’s Club Community Commitment
To underscore the commitment of Sam’s Club to give back to the communities it serves, associates from the McAllen club have selected several local organizations to collectively receive $25,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation, including:
•Homer J. Morris Middle School
•McAllen Chamber of Commerce
•Boys and Girls Club of Edinburg Rio-Grande Valley
•McAllen Police Department
•Texas Citrus Fiesta
•Keep McAllen Beautiful
•Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association
•Renaissance Cancer Foundation
•Science Academy of South Texas
The grant to Homer J. Morris Middle School will help the school replace a sign at the school’s entrance. Sam’s Club has “adopted” the school and will provide continuous support to the facility through donations and volunteer support.
The new McAllen club joins the existing Sam’s Club to fight hunger in the area by making regular product donations to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. The program is part of a partnership between Sam’s Club and Feeding America. Sam’s Club locations across the country regularly donate perishable food items to area hunger relief agencies, helping fight hunger in their communities and reducing food waste. Last year, Sam’s Club donated more than 13 million pounds of food to Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity.
