The Athletics Division of the Parks and Recreation Department offers a full program throughout the year. Adult sports leagues, youth sports clinics, and special athletic events highlight the schedule.



Athletic leagues play under the rules and regulations of the Amateur Softball 
Association (ASA) and theTexas Amateur Athletics Federation (TAAF). Visit and stay up to date with registration, schedules and scores.


Running Events    

Throughout the year, McAllen Parks and Recreation hosts some of South Texas’ premier running events. Experience a variety of race routes sure to challenge every runner’s skill level. Medals are awarded to both males and females in 13 different age groups. View current and past results.

McAllen Marathon

Join us on December 14, 2014 at the McAllen Marathon for a 13.1 mile half marathon, 26.2 mile fullmarathon or 5 person relay marathon adventure through the streets of tropical McAllen, Texas where the average December weather is 50 to 71 degrees! Start time will be 7:00 AM for all races which will start and finish at the De Leon Soccer Complex at Buddy Owens and 34th Street. The race courses are flat and fast with a South Texas breeze on asphalt routes that will cruise through shady McAllen neighborhoods with all the support needed to get you across the finish line for your first or fastest time!The McAllen Marathon is a USATF-certified marathon, a great Boston Qualifier!

McAllen Open Tennis Tournament

Annual tournament includes men’s, women’s, and youth singles, doubles, and mixed doubles brackets.

TAAF Sports

The Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (TAAF) promotes, organizes and conducts amateur athletics in the state of Texas. Participation in local TAAF programs provides the opportunity for both youth and adults to advance to sectional and state competitions.

NFL Punt, Pass, & Kick - Youth Football Skills Challenge

This annual competition allows boys and girls ages 6 to 15 the opportunity to punt, pass, & kick their way to an NFL playoff game.

Aquafina Pitch, Hit & Run – Youth Baseball Skills Challenge

This annual competition allows boys and girls ages 6 to 15 the opportunity to punt, pass, & kick their way to an NFL playoff game.

Umpire Clinic

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation is offering an exciting training opportunity for ASA slow pitch umpires. The clinic consists of a 4-hour classroom session, lunch, ASA Certification Exam and 3-hour field session.
