Recycling for the Future...

The City of McAllen is very proud of its recycling program. In 1994 the Public Works Department launched the new Automated Curbside Recycling Program. The Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC), recognized it as the first ever, in the state of Texas.

Each residential customer receives a blue automated container for commingled recyclables. Containers are serviced once per week. We ask that containers be placed out by 7:00am the scheduled day of collection. If you live in a duplex, four-plex or in an apartment complex and are interested in recycling, please bring your recyclables to the Recycling Center.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Re-buy

Through staff’s outreach education efforts, over 39,000 people learned about the benefits of recycling and composting. Staff visited schools, civic groups, churches, and surrounding communities resulting in over 5,077 tons of recyclable commodities collected such as cardboard, paper, aluminum, and tin, thus yielding an increase of 20% in recycling sales revenue.

Workplace Recycling

We encourage everyone to join us in our recycling endeavor. The Public Works Department offers dumpsters and automated containers to businesses interested in recycling. This service is absolutely FREE OF CHARGE. Four (4) cubic yards mechanized side loader containers with built in slots for cardboard are placed at commercial sites that generate a great deal of cardboard, (ie. high school cafeterias, stop and go stores, fast foods, department stores, and electronic stores). Blue automated recycling containers are offered to city buildings, schools, and private offices for the recycling of office paper. This collection is strictly for mixed office paper.

Businesses save money when they recycle. They have the opportunity to reduce their monthly bill by as much as 40% simply by implementing a recycling program in the workplace. Find out how much by calling Public Works office at (956) 681-4000.
