McAllen- Good news for taxpayers. In Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting, McAllen City Commissioners approved the city’s tax rate. At the recommendation of City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. the 47.63 cents per every $100 saw no change from the last year’s rate.
City commissioners crafted next fiscal year’s budget over a series of meetings in the last two months. At 47.63 cents per every $100 of assessed value, McAllen’s tax rate is one of the lowest in Hidalgo County.
“The city tax rate reflects a long term commitment by the City to the tax payer of McAllen while also recognizing the importance of growing the tax base to meet the challenges of a growing community,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling.
The last three years, the city could have operated about 150 days with the amount of money it has in reserves, which was above $40 million, according to city figures. Rodriguez recommended 154 days for next year totaling $44 million.
Rodriguez suggested a $288 million budget that includes a $112 million general fund.
The proposed general fund budget projects revenues over expenditures in the amount of $266,568 million, ensuring the City continues to operate in the black.
